The Arena Town

No matter where you turn in Gruungrad, you are likely to see a brawl. Whether it’s two people arguing at a bar, or two bitter rivals start a duel of honor in the streets, fighting and combat have a huge presence in the town. You can hear the crowd’s loud cheers that echo out of the arena. The people walking past you are always discussing the last fight they saw, or the rumors of who they heard is going to be featured in tonight’s rumble. The smell of cooked, slightly burnt meat is mixed with the scent of dry blood and sweat.

Gruungrad is said to make the toughest warriors in the land. It is a place of honor, and your honor is determined by who you have beaten in battle. The arena is the centerpiece of the town and drives the dreams and livelihood of almost everyone living in Gruungrad. Even people who are not directly involved in the fighting thrive off the arena. They might prepare weapons for the combatants. Maybe they sell food in the stands for spectators to enjoy. Or they might be clerics that help heal the fighters after the battle. It is clear that fighting is what drives the town to operate.

A long time ago Gruungrad was nothing more than a large collection of different Orc tribes. Eventually the humans pushed the orcs to the brink of destruction, and they started to focus on developing their own settlement instead of sending out raiding parties. The harsh lands that surround them are full of life that is edible, however these animals were particularly dangerous and required skilled hunters to take them down. Small elite hunting squads had to leave Gruungrad to bring back food for the community. Warriors would duel each other for the honor and opportunity of going out on these hunts. It is here that the desire for fighting started to grow. The scope of these battles grew over time until the arena that is well known today was established. Nowadays there aren’t many orcs left in Gruungrad. Over time humans and orcs in Gruungrad grew so close that half-orcs are now the largest population in Gruungrad.

Humans moved to Gruungrad only after a couple decades had passed since the last conflict with the orcs. What they found was a society built on honor and combat. While most lawful humans of Crownworth were disgusted, some humans were excited to have the opportunity to act on their more primal desires. Fighting was not outlawed and was even encouraged! It was a huge break from the stiff laws that govern Crownworth, and soon many humans migrated to Gruungrad to live in a society with less restriction.

The dragonborn of Shurrann were never far away from the battles that raged on in Gruungrad. While most nobles scoffed at the idea of brawling in some sand arena, some dragonborn’s interest was piqued. Dragonborn are a proud race and they consider themselves to be great in multiple areas, including battle. Orcs and half-orcs were renowned for their strength and prowess in battle. The thought of taking down one of them in battle excited some dragonborn, so they moved to Gruungrad to get a taste of the action.

The dwarves in Voldhor are great smiths, but many never see their weapons put to great use. Some dwarves long for more than just creating amazing weapons. They want to see just how deadly and potent their weapons are in practice. These kinds of dwarves starting moving to Gruungrad, renowned for the ferocity of its arena. Their the smiths could finally see warriors in actions with their finely crafted weapons, though some dwarves preferred to jump into the arena to get a taste of the action themselves.
